The antioxidative effects and antimicrobial effects of glycoprotein from Solanum nigrum Linne (SNL glycoprotein) was tested with hydroxyl radical (OH)-exposed NIH/3T3 and microorganisms such as Escherichia coli (JA221, XL1-Blue), and Listeria monocytogenes. It was detected one glycoprotein (150 kDa, SNL glycoprotein ¥°) from SNL fruits and the other (210 kDa, SNL glycoprotein ¥±) from SNL stems and leaves on 10% SDS-PAGE, and used for further experiment. From the antioxidative test, both glycoprotein ¥° and glycoprotein ¥± were revealed to have protective effects against hydroxyl radical (OH) at 10§¶/mL (p<0.05) and at 20§¶/mL (p<0.01), respectively. The growths of JA221 and XL1-Blue were inhibited up to 25, and 41 % by the addition of 1§¶/mL SNL glycoprotein ¥°, while 28, and 52% at the same concentration of SNL glycoprotein ¥±, respectively. In Listeria monocytogenes, the growth inhibition was 28, and 35% at 0.5§¶/mL SNL glycoprotein ¥° and SNL glycoprotein ¥±, respectively, and both glycoproteins have similar effects at 1§¶/mL. From our results, it was concluded that SNL glycoprotein ¥° and ¥± have scavenging activities on hydroxyl radicals and inhibitory effects on microorganisms.
